About UsFunded by the OVCR, Immigration as an Area of Excellence (AOE) provides a distinctive opportunity to define a UIC identity around a critically important area of scholarship that touches Chicago and UIC directly. Immigrant communities are integral to the city of Chicago, its neighborhoods and suburbs, and are well represented among the diverse student body at UIC. Immigrants are at the forefront of current national debates and a fast growing part of our population. Currently 38.5 million people residing in the United States are foreign-born (U.S. Census, 2010) and 30% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are first- or second-generation immigrants (Rumbaut & Komaie, 2010). Documented and undocumented immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking, and foreign students are among immigrant groups that are coming into contact with U.S. institutions (schools, medical care, etc.), but their needs remain poorly understood. |
